I know because I use windows server 2012 R2 at home for learning reasons since 2 years, and after 100 games I never had any compatibility issues related to me using a server, whatever worked for Windows 8 worked for Server 2012 as well. The core of the Windows Server systems is the same and it will work with all games that would work with the according user Windows (20128 | 2008 7).
